Hey guys, I just picked up GW the original and factions. Figured I'd start with the first and move onto factions. I wanted to make a necromancer and I read the necro forums and couldn't really anything that will attribute to the answering of my question.

I want to know what is a good second profession that will suite me to discovering the game as I progress through it because I don't want to make a poor choice. Also, I want to know a build and "rotation" if you will. I understand these may be some very basic questions, but remember, I'm a newb. :P

Welcome to GW - hope you enjoy yourself!

There are a couple of good choices for a Necromancer's secondary profession. Mesmer or Monk are probably the best choices. Later on in the game, you'll have the opportunity to change secondary professions, so your choice won't be permanent.

Some tips for Prophecies characters: Don't sell any dyes until you've gone through the acadamy and don't do to the acadamy until you've reached level 7-8. Take your time, and hit all the quests.

For Prophecies I'd suggest Mesmer as well, since you get access to a nice selection of hexes and domination skills that might augment very well. Anything you can do to make your enemies' lives more miserable is always a plus. =P

Of course, I started my Necro in Factions and because of that was able to take advantage of the Ritualist profession, which so far has proven quite invaluable at keeping me alive and making sure I can support my allies well. So you might consider that when you get the ability to change classes later on.

Being new, I'm not too sure you will find using a secondary profession of too much use for now, but I'd pick Mesmer/Ele/Monk IMO. You don't have to 'use' anything related to your 2nd profession at all through the game, it's required to advance into the 'real' game but not required to be used at all while you play.

You also made a good choice starting with Prophecies. It was the first GW game that came out in 2005 and most veteran players will say it was the best (me being one, I agree). In Prophecies, Advancing/Building your character takes time, is slower then the other games, but steady and is actually fun, IMO it makes you feel like you are getting more out of the game.

For instance, you will actually level as you go across the storyline, you'll pickup better armor and weapons too. And when you reach a certain point, you will be able to change your secondary profession and start two quests to get the rest of your character attributes.

Compared to Factions and NF... levels, attributes and the ability to change your secondary are basically thrown at you just as you are leaving the 'noob' islands, it gets the job done quick for sure if you have played already and are impatient....but if you want to play steadily to learn about GW more, prophecies is the way to go.

And I personally think that prophecies characters look better.

Necro is a good choice. Don't worry about messing up with your second profession, you can correct it later in the game. Besides, playing pve necro will most likely be pure necro and you can switch between Death, Curses or Blood Necro.

Welcome to GW and I hope you will enjoy the game just like the others.

As they've said, you're able to change your secondary any time once you've reached a certain point in the storry, so don't worry too much. Learn your primary profession first

I just wanted to say welcome to GW and take your time to enjoy the halloween festival, so you don't have to wait another year to experience it.

If I were you, I'd try to reach LA before October the 31, so you'll get the festival hat (or buy Night Fall, and create a character there to get the hat from Kamadan, NF and EotN are nice games too).

I appreciate all the swift replies. Really impressed with that. I decided to go with a mesmer due to the hexes that profession offers after doing some more reading. Thanks again everyone. Feel free to add me in game if you wish - Corrupt The Blood.

Minion Master for PvE. nuff said
Use Mesmer secondary when you play some of the more difficult missions to lay down massive degeneration and basically torture your enemies to the brink of insanity. Gotta love Necromancers

p.s. Welcome to GW! You're joining a little bit late in the game but you know how it goes; better late than never.

I also just started, but I made an Elementalist (I haven't taken a secondary yet). However, you guys have me intrigued by the Mesmer. Would that be a good one for an Ele?

For ele a Mesmer or a rit is good for self healing. Monk is a good choice as usual. Its just sad that you've joined so late. You might find the game boring because there arent man players that still play actively... i think.

But nevertheless, Welcome to GW!

My main is E/Me, and it basically allows me to sit back and nuke/snare/hex spam the crowds I run into. A couple of the Inspiration skills are excellent for energy control, and gives you access to good stances for armor buffs if you need them. There have been a few instances where I've dropped all my Me skills from the bar completely and run straight Ele, but by and large I think it's a good pair from a tactical perspective.

I've also only been playing for a month or so. So don't feel completely alone. =P
